Knee surgery a valuable solution for Rockwell City woman

As Sherry Layman sips a cup of coffee, she recalls how pain limited her independence just a few months ago. “I used to go to coffee and play cards with my friends. I was accustomed to driving.” That all changed as pain in her right knee kept her from the activities she enjoyed. She had to retire from driving a semi with her husband Jerry because it hurt too much to get in and out of the cab.
When she began having issues with her balance, she turned to physical therapist Kevin Hejtmanek at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) Rehab Services for help. “Sherry was having pain in her leg around the knee, especially with weight bearing activity. She also had difficulty bending her knee with other indications that a surgical procedure may be needed.
With minimal improvement doing conservative treatment, I felt an orthopaedic consult would be the next step. I spoke with Sherry’s primary care provider, Barb Weber ARNP, and we both agreed an orthopaedic consultation should be the next step for Sherry,” explains Kevin.
