Calhoun County’s Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, will have a new venue this year.
The event will take place on the Calhoun County Courthouse lawn, Community Manager Ann Hoeppner said.
“It’s just going to be such a beautiful, festive, open setting,” Hoeppner said. “I think it will be a true community celebration.”
Hoeppner met with community members Jan. 11 in Rockwell City to announce the change, and a week earlier with the Board of Supervisors, to make sure she had permission to use the courthouse lawn for the event. These days, she said, the events don’t focus on walking laps around a track. A few ceremonial laps still take place, with a primary focus on the survivors’ lap, she said, but most of the events are off the track anyway, so the lack of track at the courthouse won’t cause a problem.
