Since taking office in March, Sheriff Scott Anderson has been actively updating the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors about likely changes coming to the department.
Some, such as a radio system upgrade, are projects that have been on the books for awhile.
Others, such as a need to adjust the department’s jail cost budget, are the result of circumstances out of the department’s control. The latter has caused supervisors to crack jokes about Anderson taking a tough stance on crime, but the vast majority of the increased warrants his deputies are serving and arresting people for don’t come from any investigation they’ve done.
The root of that situation, which came to a head this year when the department’s warrant numbering system ran out of numbers for the calendar year at the end of August, the first time the system has ever reached its numbering limit, goes back about three years, Anderson said. That’s when the state Judiciary switched to a paperless system, and criminal defendants stopped getting paper notices informing them of their upcoming court dates or fees.
