South Central Calhoun’s varsity football team kicked off the 2017 season against Class 3A’s Carroll High in Carroll Friday, Aug. 25. Though the Titans came up on the short end of a 34-24 final score in the opener, SCC head coach Bryan Case said his team learned a lot from the game and will move forward and focus on their attentions on correcting some of the errors that were made against the Tigers.
“We’re disappointed in the loss, but we’re not disappointed in the effort of our kids,” said Case. “We knew going into this game that we were going to make mistakes (and we did), but our kids never gave up and they kept fighting until the very end. That was one of the things I wanted to see out of our team. I wanted to see how they would respond in all situations, and for the most part, I was pleased. We have a lot to work on, but the good news is, it’s all correctable. We have good kids and our team will learn from this and move forward. It was a pleasure playing up a class against a traditional power, which in the long run, will only make us better.”
For the game, SCC finished with 229 total yards compared to 357 for the Titans. SCC was led offensively by Chase McAlister, who finished with 106 yards rushing on six attempts including a 60-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. McAlister also had a 39-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Hunter Muhlbauer with 2:42 left in the third quarter, which gave the Titans their only lead of the game at 24-20.
