When the South Central Calhoun girls' golf team started their 2021 campaign, there were plenty of new faces and expectations were hard to pinpoint. Fortunately, the Titans enjoyed some solid outings over the course of the spring season, thanks to a mix of talent and enthuasiasm.

It paved the way for junior Sayer Steig to play her way to the Class 2A Girls' Region 3 Finals, held this past Monday at the Eagle Grove Golf Course, and brought her very close to playing at the Class 2A Girls' State Golf Tournament. So close, that Steig was seven strokes away from achieving an elusive state berth.

Steig finished with a total of 110 strokes, which landed her 22nd overall. Sayer performed well in her two rounds, firing a 59 in her first nine holes and carding a 51 in her second round.

The two state qualifying teams coming out of Eagle Grove were Roland Story (376 strokes) and Dike-New Hartford (412 strokes). The individuals who qualified for the Class 2A State Golf Meet, set for June 1 and June 2 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, were Okoboji's Grace Butler (81 strokes) and Ella Meyer of West Marshall (103 strokes).
