A MidAmerican Energy crew working in a Lake City basement last month made an unexpected find – bones, wrapped in a rag rug.
The crew brought the bones to the Lake City Police Department March 31, sending officers to three experts before determining the bones were animal, not human, Police Chief Bobby Rist said last week.
A veterinarian, the first expert police asked about the bones, said the bones did not appear to be animal. A doctor at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital told officers the bones appeared to be human. Rist then took the bones to the state medical examiner, located in Ankeny, on April 3.
By April 5, Rist had definitive answer from the medical examiner.
