Onstage at South Central Calhoun Middle School Oct. 9, Sarah Uthoff donned a white apron over her blue, 19th century style dress.
In doing so, she switched from talking about beloved Midwestern pioneer author Laura Ingalls Wilder to talking as though Wilder herself were speaking. Uthoff shared stories from Wilder’s childhood, spent in Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota, while referencing events from Wilder’s adult life in South Dakota.
Uthoff set the scene by first reading from Wilder’s debut book, “Little House in the Big Woods,” which featured stories from when the Ingalls family lived near Lake Pepin, Wis.
“Pa did not like Pepin after awhile,” Uthoff said. “There were too many people coming in. And he was tired of fighting the walnut trees.”
