Schools find test scores dip for sixth-graders statewide

As South Central Calhoun Middle School Principal Marc DeMoss reviewed this year’s Iowa Assessment results, one data point in particular stuck out.
“For sixth grade, our Iowa Assessments always dip,” DeMoss told school board members May 29.
That isn’t unique to SCC, DeMoss said. At a recent conference, officials from other districts said they have noticed the same trend. And, as at SCC, those officials have found their seventh-grade students bouncing back from the lower scores the year before. DeMoss said he wonders if there is some disconnect between the assessments for sixth-grade students and the state standards for that grade level that might account for the dip in proficiency statewide.
Board member Darci Lightner said she had seen the same thing in school.
