South Central Calhoun fifth-grader Gracie Campbell set a goal about a year ago, her dad, Tommy Campbell, said.
Gracie was born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, a medical condition in which a child is born with fixed joints. The condition is not degenerative – people born with it do not get worse, though they do face multiple surgeries and physical therapies to create some joint flexibility.
“She wanted to do something” to raise awareness about AMC, as the condition is generally referred to, Campbell said. “She wanted to raise money for Arthrogyposis Multiplex Congenital Support International.”
That’s the group that provides support and information to people born with AMC.
So Gracie organized a walk, set for 7 p.m. June 30 at the SCC High School track in Lake City. The event coincides with AMC Awareness Day. Participants will don blue t-shirts, because blue is the awareness color assigned to AMC, Campbell said. The event will run until Gracie walks four laps around the track. She will complete the laps without some assistive devices she uses on her feet. Her intention in doing so, Campbell said, is to challenge herself.
