A great season for the South Central Calhoun girls varsity basketball team came to an unfortunate end under the direction of first year head coach Eric Francis Saturday, Feb. 17, as the Titans played in a 2018 Class 3A Regional Final against the 2017 3A runner-up Sioux Center (22-2) in Sioux Rapids.
The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A and the 2017 3A state runner-up squad a season ago, burst out to an early 13-0 lead and never looked back as the Titans were not able to get to within less than 10 points the rest of the contest in a 73-43 loss as SCC finished the season at 22-3 overall.
The Titans (22-3) first basket of the contest came with 2:24 left in the first period as SCC trailed at that point 13-2. The Warriors would close out the quarter with a 19-4 lead. In the second period, SCC was able to get things going offensively, but so were the Warriors, as the Titans scored 20 points to 19 points again for Sioux Center as the Warriors led 38-24 at the half.
In the third period, SCC would close the point gap to 10 points on a three-pointer by Jessica Hicks with just over five minutes to play in the period as the Titans trailed 43-33 with 5:02 remaining. Sioux Center would call a timeout to halt the Titans momentum and then outscored SCC 8-2 the remainder of the period to lead 54-35 after three periods of play.
