Rockwell City’s Murley returning to Uganda to continue Peace Corps work

A Rockwell City woman has finished the first portion of her Peace Corps tenure in Uganda, but will soon head back to spend another year in the East African nation.
Brandi Murley, a 2011 Rockwell City/Lytton graduate, headed to Uganda in 2016, with intentions of teaching agricultural practices. It seemed like a natural fit for the Iowan with a degree in agricultural leadership. But when she arrived, she began to realize that maybe her plan wouldn’t work exactly as she had hoped.
“Being a female and a white person, it was kind of hard for me to convince people I knew what I was talking about,” Murley told the Rockwell City Rotary Club July 20.
More specifically, she said, just as Americans have preconceived notions and stereotypes about what is African, Ugandans thought all Americans live in cities, buying food from grocery stores. Murley said she couldn’t convince them to believe that Americans can be deeply involved in growing and producing food.
