Barb Thomas and her family weren’t home for the early 2004 fire that destroyed their basement and most of their belongings and displaced them for months.
Thomas was at work, while her husband, Trae, had been working in his basement dental lab, where he made dentures. He left the house, to go for a run.
Not long later, Thomas’ mother-in-law walked up to their house from across the street.
Just as she passed by, “the basement window blew out,” Thomas said.
She was able to alert the fire department.
“They said another five minutes and the whole house would have been gone,” Thomas said.
Pick up the April 18 edition to find out what the American Red Cross is doing to help families prevent fire deaths and injuries.
