The rules in a country school were clear cut and the punishments swift, South Central Calhoun fifth-grade students learned last week.
“Let’s say you got in late, five minutes tardy,” Faith Blaskovich said as she read through a list of rules that applied to the schools the students’ grandparents or great-grandparents may have attended. “You get to stay with me (the teacher) an hour after school.”
A late-arriving student might be assigned any number of cleaning tasks, from washing the windows to sweeping the floor she said.
Students who tried to write with their left hands would receive “three whacks” because everyone who attended the one-room schools had to write with their right hands, Blaskovich said.
Using curse words would earn a student a suspension, while carving on the desk, lying, cheating and fighting were grounds for expulsion.
