South Central Calhoun Middle School students proved the value of pocket change last week, Principal Marc DeMoss told the school board at their Dec. 18 meeting.
“The kids really bought into this,” DeMoss said, explaining how students held a Penny War for three days the week before the meeting to benefit a student who had fallen ill several weeks earlier and who remained hospitalized. “You don’t get to be involved in these types of things that often.”
Students brought in $250 the first day, raised the total by $600 the second day, then brought in the final $2,000 the last day.
DeMoss praised the giving from students and staff, which he said reflected community values.
“At the core, this is the place to live and the place to raise a family,” he said.
