Vietnam veterans may not have received much of a welcome home following their service in Southeast Asia, but veterans organizations today are trying to recognize those veterans.
One of the ways Iowa veterans groups, including the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and the Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs, is working to spread that recognition is through a new book, available for free to any Vietnam veteran in the state, through county veterans offices.
“A Time to Honor: Stories of Service, Duty and Sacrifice,” commemorates the 50th anniversary of the war, and individual state editions incorporate the unique stories of residents of each state. The Iowa Edition is one of the first to be completed.
“The goal is to have a book for every Vietnam veteran,” Calhoun County Veteran Affairs Director Rich Shinn said. “All of our county Vietnam veterans are eligible. We want them to come in and be recognized.”
