The South Central Calhoun High School Academic Decathlon team outscored 10 teams from other states to place second in an online, national competition. This is the third consecutive year the team has placed in the top three, coach John Olson said.
“This was a year where we had lost a really strong group of people last spring,” Olson said, referring to last year’s senior team members. “I didn’t know how everything was going to come together this year.”
The team won the state small school competition for the seventh consecutive year, and several students really showed how well they had mastered the information they learned about Africa, this year’s theme. Senior Jacob Stephenson won four event medals in the national competition, earning him the distinction of having won the most medals of any Academic Decathlon participant in school history, Olson said. His nationals medals this year included first place in science and economics, and he placed fourth overall among varsity competitors.
