ISU Extension: Family rules help children understand boundaries and expectations

AMES – As they prepare for a new school year, many children and parents talk about what they might expect. In the news release sent out last Thursday, as children move from one grade to the next, they encounter new classrooms, new teachers and even new rules and expectations.

“When children know the rules at school, they can anticipate what is expected and feel safe and secure,” said Barbara Dunn Swanson, a human sciences specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

ISU Extension to host meeting on Emerald Ash Borers

According to an August 24 news release, the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Calhoun County will host an informational meeting concerning the presence of emerald ash borer (EAB), an exotic, yet destructive insect of ash trees, which is spreading in Iowa and has been recently identified in Calhoun County. 

The meeting will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Calhoun County Expo Center in Rockwell City. There, a panel of experts will discuss the Emerald Ash Borer.

ISU Extension: Free Customer Service Workshop slated for Sept. 20

According to a news release sent out this past Friday, a one-hour customer service workshop for managers and front-line employees of businesses will be presented on Sept. 20 at the Iowa State University Extension-Calhoun County office in Rockwell City.

The workshop will take place from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

The workshop will focus on best practices in attracting and retaining customers. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Economic Development staff at the request of Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa’s three tourism regions developed the program.

Emerald Ash Borer discovered in Calhoun County

DES MOINES – Emerald ash borer, the ash tree-killing beetle, has been found in Calhoun, Winnebago and Worth counties for the first time, according to a news release sent out this past Monday. This invasive insect has now been found in 84 of Iowa’s 99 counties since its first detection in 2010.

ISU Calhoun County Extension Council given Distinguished Service Award

According to a news release sent out this past Thursday, the Calhoun County Extension Council earlier this year received the Northwest Area Extension Council Distinguished Service Award. 

Dr. John Lawrence, Vice President of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, presented the award, which recognized the Calhoun County Extension Council for their work in providing research-based programming to diverse audiences and for fostering long-term partnerships. 

ISU Extension to offer online food preservation classes

Many Iowans are exploring how to preserve their garden bounty to enjoy it all year long.

According to a news release sent out this past Friday, you can learn how to safely preserve that fresh taste of summer during upcoming free, one-hour online food preservation classes from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

ISU Extension to host Farmland Leasing Meeting next Tuesday

According to a news release sent out this past Thursday, the Iowa State University–Calhoun County Extension and Outreach office will host a meeting at 1:30 p.m. next Tuesday at the ISU Extension office, located at 325 Court Street in Rockwell City. The doors for the meeting will open at 1 p.m. 

The meeting will last approximately two and a half hours and will be facilitated by Alexis Stevens and Tim Christensen, farm and agriculture business management specialists with ISU Extension and Outreach.

ISU Extension: Where are the Lightning bugs?

AMES – It’s still too early to know what the lightning bug population will be this year. Be patient. A few adults have already been spotted, but most lightning bugs will arrive around the Fourth of July.

Adults live for a few weeks, during which time they must attract a mate (the purpose of the light), mate and lay eggs. In most years, lightning bug populations fade quickly, and most are gone by the end of July.

Lightning bugs are also called fireflies, which is peculiar, because they are neither bugs nor flies. 

ISU Extension to hold jam making, food dehydration workshop

According to a news release sent out last Thursday, you can learn all the basics of water bath canning, making jam, and dehydrating food at a Food Preservation Workshop, set for 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on July 22 at the Calhoun County Expo Center in Rockwell City.

The workshop is part of Preserve the Taste of Summer, a food preservation course offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Renee Sweers, ISU Extension and Outreach Nutrition and Wellness program specialist, will lead the workshop.

NEW Cooperative donates to local 4-H clubs

FORT DODGE – Once again, the NEW Cooperative Foundation has shown their commitment to supporting local 4-H youth.

In the May 17 news release, the foundation recently donated $35,700 to 121 area 4-H clubs totaling to be 2,380 individual 4-H club members.

The money is donated for half of each 4-H youth’s dues in NEW Cooperative’s trade territory, which includes Webster, Calhoun, Carroll, Greene, Franklin, Sac, Pocahontas, Humboldt, Hamilton, Kossuth, Cherokee, Crawford, Plymouth, Monona, Wright and Woodbury counties.
