PRESERVING THE PAST: Of Soup Tureens and Crockery

One of the many reasons I so enjoy in sharing Alpha Owens’ essays is that she tells the small things of everyday life in her time. In her selection, “Dishes,” Alpha points out several times that a difference existed between those of material wealth and the plain folks of the countryside.

We also know how times change as Alpha wrote her memories nearly 60 years ago, and her references to “antiques” makes me smile. My own china hutches (yes, more than one!) are full of family heirloom china and glass from Germany and England with quite a few pieces from Alpha’s era.
