SCC In The Middle, April 15
Well, middle school is certainly looking different! As teachers and students try to figure out our new distance learning, these are a few of the tools we’re using in the middle school.
Google Classroom is an online site where teachers can post materials (videos, assignments, attach print resources, etc,) and students can also post work (assignments, questions, comments, etc.). Some teachers are creating long-term projects to work on, while others are posting short work assignments, activities, games, videos, and more to help their students to stay engaged.
IXL is an online program, which provides math problems/activities as well as reading/language arts materials to use for practice; it is even broken down by specific skill/unit (it corrects work with an explanation if a student makes a mistake). Our SCC school district pays for this program annually for our middle school students to review and practice skills outside of the classroom.
Mrs. Dawson is connecting students with math skills through weekly activities and learning opportunities in Google Classroom, suggesting IXL skills to practice and posting on her middle school lesson plan page.
Mrs. Neubaum sent home an April poetry packet of famous poems. Students are encouraged to identify figurative language examples in each poem, as well as try writing different types of poetry themselves. She is hoping to read/respond to some of their original poetry posted in her Google Classroom!
Mr. Feldhans is connecting with his science students over Google Classroom, and is planning on posting videos to engage students!
Ms. Gerke is encouraging her civics students to be aware as our current events unfold. She suggests watching the news and identifying how each of the three branches of government is responding to this new situation as it changes daily. Keep a daily journal to record our history! She will continue to connect with her students through email and shared Google Docs.
Parents, of course, are still able to communicate with their students’ teachers through email.
We’re all trying new ways to stay connected with our students and school district! This is a learning experience for all of us!
