SCC baseball, softball teams start play this week
As the temperatures begin to rise to where it's needed to wear a ballcap, t-shirt, a pair of shorts and flip-flops, it's time to blast John Fogerty's "Centerfield" and Alabama's "Cheap Seats."
The South Central Calhoun baseball and softball teams will return to their respective fields of play this week, following a busy spring season, several weeks of practice and coaches both new and familiar to the realm.
The Titan girls started their season this past Monday against Storm Lake, while the SCC boys start their season on Tuesday against Ar-We-Va.
Both teams will aim at improving their win totals compared the shortened 2020 season, as the SCC girls finished 4-11 overall and the Titan boys came out with an 0-11 record.
The baseball scene will see a team with plenty of experience, headed up by seniors Ayden Toms and Evan Jacobs, along with juniors Cody Thompson, Brodie Voith and Jacob Kalkwarf. Alongside that core is sophomore Chance Roeder and freshman Gavin Batta, who have had grown used to the speed of the varsity game, due to extensive playing time in 2020.
SCC will be guided by first-year head coach Courtland Ellis. Ellis replaced departed head coach Nathan Lamphier, who went on to guide the Waterloo West baseball program.
Ellis is joined by assistant coach Chase Scheidegger, who just finished his spring football season with NAIA National Runner-up Northwestern College. Scheidegger is deeply familiar with the Titan baseball program, and knows the current and up-and-coming players inside and out.
As for softball, there will be strong senior leadership in 2021, spearheaded by Sally Musselman, Kortney Riley, Emma Geno, Brielle Korleski, Ashley Hanks and Kennadie Machovec. Sophomore slugger Keira Hammen returns, as well, and junior Emma Anderson will handle catching duties.
Junior Addisyn Korleski, sophomore Kylee Schleisman and freshman Olivia Toms will seek to capture extensive varsity time, and freshman Gracie Hungate could become a solid number two pitcher behind Musselman.
Legendary girls' basketball coach Dave Birks will mentor the Titan softball team this season, taking over for the departed John Kennedy. Kennedy, beloved by those within the SCC softball program and beyond, had to retire from coaching, due to complications that have risen from his battle against cancer.
Kari Musselman returns as assistant coach, also providing a sense of stability for SCC.
The Titan girls will play 10 games at the Titan Diamond, while the SCC boys welcome competition to the Ballpark in Lytton on 12 occasions in 2021.
All games will be played at the SCC Summer Sports Complex in Lytton, and roundups on how both Titan summer sports teams will fare will be highlighted in upcoming editions of The Graphic-Advocate.
