For the past decade, the South Central Calhoun Academic Decathlon team has one of the best to come from Iowa. While 2020 didn’t yield a United States Academic Decathlon National Finals, 2021 did – and the Titans finished in the top 10 in Division IV.

Competing in a virtual version of the National Finals, the SCC Academic Decathlon tabbed eighth overall within Division IV, when results were issued on May 4. The competition took place from April 28 to May 1.

As a team, the Titans placed third in Division IV in the Super Quiz. Senior Michael Mossman, senior AJ Maulsby and sophomore Parker Pagel then led SCC individually.

Mossman captured six national event medals, followed by Maulsby’s two awards and Pagel’s two medals.

Other SCC representatives in the competition were senior Maggie Simpson, junior Russell DeWitt, sophomore Emma Englin, sophomore Rain Simpson-Weiss, sophomore Caleb Blair and freshman Allison Von Gundy.
