Jane Mertes

Jane A. Mertes, 71, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021 at Shady Oaks Care Center, Lake City.

Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Rockwell City, with Fr. Lynn Bruch officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial of ashes will be at St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City is serving the family.

Jane Annette Brennan was born December 16, 1949 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. She graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1968. In 1972, she graduated from Wayne State College with a degree in Elementary Education. Jane later earned a Masters Degree from University of South Dakota. On August 4, 1984 she was united in marriage to Douglas Mertes at LeMars. The couple established their home in Merrill. Jane taught in the LeMars School District for 34 years until her retirement in 2006. Doug passed away in 2007. In 2008, Jane returned to Rockwell City. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

Jane is survived by her sister Sue Daisy of Rockwell City; sister-in-law Cheri Brennan of Pheonix, Arizona; nieces, Lonnie Holder, Lea Rastetter, Kenzie Brennan, Diane Baker, and Shelly Lucas; nephews, Justin, Jake and Joe Brennan; several great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Doug Mertes; parents, Bernard and Eleanor (Ricklefs) Brennan; brothers, Patrick, Michael, and Ron Brennan; and brother-in-law Terry Daisy.
