Caroline Smires

Caroline M. Smires, 80, of Lake City, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by her family.

Caroline May Metzel was born in Columbia, Pennsylvania Aug. 14, 1942. She was the daughter of LeRoy and Edna (Derr) Metzel. Caroline was united Dec. 13, 1970 in marriage to Robert Smires in Brown Mills, New Jersey. The couple lived in Brown Mills until the mid-1970s when they moved to Sac City, Iowa where they raised their family. Caroline worked at Noble Implement and the Sac City Hospital. She later worked for Sitel Telemarketing in Carroll. In the mid-2000s, Caroline and Robert moved to Lake City. Robert passed away in 2018, and Caroline continued to make her home in Lake City.

Caroline enjoyed gambling, being on her computer, holding her baby Adeline, eating chocolate, watching TLC, and dancing to Elvis’s music with Robert. She loved being with family, especially her great-grandkids.

Survivors include her daughter, Deb (Gary) Mauer; son, John Smires; grandchildren, Jessica (Josh) Asmus, Matthew (Lori) Mauer, Heather (Jay) Hull, Sarah (Blake) Mohr, Josh (Saige) Smires and Sonya Smith; great-grandchildren, Destini Asmus, Kylee Mauer, Kayden Mauer, Kynlee Mauer, Zeke Hull, Mitchell Hull, Jaylee Hull, Layla Hull, Liam Mohr, Jerzye Smires, Kimberae Smires, Jacob Smires, Liian Smith and Airion Smith, and adopted grandson, Derric Honeycutt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents; her brother, Herman O’Brien, and her beloved cat, Kitty Too.
