Vanderheiden joins Calhoun County Conservation

Curtis Vanderheiden has been pleasantly surprised by the parks in Calhoun County.
“Calhoun County has kind of a hidden gem with all this stuff,” said Vanderheiden, who was hired earlier this summer to be the county’s new conservation director. “I want to get the county’s name out there and show what we have.”
A 2015 graduate of Buena Vista University, where he played soccer and earned a degree in environmental science, the Carroll native took his first job post-college as the assistant park manager for three state recreation areas in South Dakota, along the Missouri River.
His then-fiancee’s boss sent him a copy of the ad seeking a Calhoun County Conservation director. He applied because he always hoped to be live closer to home; he and his wife are now living in Rockwell City.
