A former Rockwell City man who is serving a life sentence for killing a Rockwell City police office successfully petitioned a judge to move back a nonjury trial for post-conviction relief.
Corey Trott lost his appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court, and late last year, filed for post-conviction for his conviction on a charge of first-degree murder for the shooting death of Rockwell City Officer Jamie Buenting in September 2013. The trial to a judge was scheduled for Thursday, but Trott requested the continuance after learning that his trial attorney, former Public Defender Joe McCarville, would be unavailable to take the witness stand this week. McCarville is scheduled to be sworn in as the newest Second Judicial District judge on Thursday.
Judge William C. Ostlund granted Trott’s request Sept. 13, but did not assign a new date for the nonjury trial.
