Calhoun County’s Board of Supervisors accepted a proposed $1,500 raise for elected officials at their Dec. 26 meeting, with one caveat.
The board opted to make their acceptance conditional on the state of the county’s budget, once budget hearings begin this month. But at least one supervisor wasn’t happy that the Compensation Board, which made the recommendation last month, went with a flat dollar amount raise, instead of a percentage for all elected officials.
“I asked them not to do that,” Supervisor Mike Cooper said, referring to the flat dollar raise. “If we went with the full $1,500, what are your thoughts on how that would trickle down through the system?”
State law prescribes a formula for how some county salaries are determined – a Compensation Board sets the annual raises for elected officials, then those officials’ deputies get a percentage of that raise. The highest-earning deputy in the county receives 85 percent of his supervisor’s salary, other salaries range from about 70 percent to 82 percent.
