Rockwell City’s Main Street Iowa application has a good chance of being selected for the economic development program, officials told the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors May 16.
“Our chances are looking pretty favorable,” Calhoun County Economic Development Corp. Director Jill Heisterkamp said. “There are only four or five towns competing for three positions.”
Main Street Iowa is run through the Iowa Economic Development Authority and receives some federal funding, Rockwell City Clerk Kelly Smidt said. The program helps cities identify building improvements in its downtown areas, as well as look at other strategies to boost usage of commercial areas.
“If accepted, a team of architects and designers would come,” Heisterkamp said. “If we’re accepting, we’re eligible for certain grants (not available to cities that aren’t in the program).”
The application focuses on the Rockwell City square, businesses one block out from square, as well as old Highway 20 and Fourth Street from High Street to the square.
