Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials approved a permit for a proposed hog confinement less than 24 hours after it met with Lohrville residents who begged the organization not to do so.
Supervisor Scott Jacobs attended that Sept. 5 public meeting with DNR acting Director Bruce Trautman about the confinement, which would be located less than two miles north of Lohrville. In late August, the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors voted against passing the matrix for the confinement, based on community opposition. Trautman told Lohrville residents Sept. 5 it was unlikely his department would reject the application, because it had enough points to pass.
“The one thing that disappointment me – the meeting was Wednesday night and the very next day we got the (approval) letter (from DNR),” Jacobs said at the Sept. 12 board meeting.
