South Central Calhoun High School will employ a Spanish teacher who hails from Spain this fall.
Earlier this summer, the SCC school board hired Jose Luis Rodriguez Lavina, 41, for the year, through the Visiting Teachers from Spain program, run through the Iowa Department of Education.
Rodriguez Lavina began teaching English and Spanish in the late 1990s, and has been at his current job as a homeroom teacher and bilingualism program coordinator since 2001. He graduated from the University of Zaragoza with a master’s degree in English philology – a combination of literary criticism, history and linguistics, also defined as the study of literary texts and written records, in 1997.
“I am enthusiastic about participating in the Visiting Teacher Program in the USA,” he said in an email to The Graphic-Advocate last week. “I look forward to an international experience in Iowa. After so many years as a teacher in Spain, I believe my experience in different subjects definitely will meet your requirements for a Visiting Teacher in your community.”
