Sheriff warns of scams targeting elderly

Calhoun County seniors haven’t escaped the notice of scammers, Sheriff Bill Davis said Thursday morning.

Con artists have targeted some of the county’s older residents with phone calls, in which the scammers claim the senior’s grandchild has been arrested, is in jail and needs money. The caller often asks the seniors not to mention the situation or call to the grandchild’s parent.

But Davis said there’s one easy way to avoid being scammed by those claims.

“Call your grandkids,” he said, adding that victims in Calhoun County have lost thousands of dollars to such scams. “They’ll soak a lot of money out of people.”

Recovering that money can be difficult.

Davis spoke at the Pomeroy Community Center, at a Seniors and Lawmen Together event, attended by a handful of senior citizens. Several attendees related their own experiences with such phone calls, as well as fake checks and false sweepstakes notifications.
