In Iowa, there are two goals for any aspiring student-athlete when they compete in track and field. One is a trip to the Iowa State Track & Field Meet. Two is a trip to the Drake Relays.
One way or another, the goal is to earn a trip to Blue Oval.
Seven members of the South Central Calhoun boys’ track and field team met one of those goals, participating in the 110th Drake Relays, held from April 24 through April 27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Those six of seven members were upperclassmen in seniors Chase McAlister, Spencer Moon, Jared Birks, Mason Merkley, Josh Van Hulzen and junior Josh Henkenius. Freshman Blake McAlister served as the alternate for the trip to Des Moines.
The events that the Titans competed were the 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay and the distance medley.
