Haley Schumacher of Lake City is the new Calhoun County Queen.
Schumacher, 17, was crowned at the Calhoun County Expo Wednesday evening. Other contestants included 2018 South Central Calhoun graduate Raegan Barrett and SCC senior Payton Macke.
Emcee Brian Lantz posed a number of questions to the young women about Calhoun County events, putting them on the spot and asking them to identify the mottos of some of the county’s smaller locales, including Yetter and Jolley. He also asked more serious questions, including one to Schumacher about what one wish she would ask for if she could.
“My one wish that I would wish would be to bring back my sister and still be with her,” Schumacher said.
Her older sister, Jill, died in 2004, of cancer.
Lantz also asked Schumacher what image of herself she thought her social media presence created. After some thought, Schumacher said she hopes people see that she likes to have fun.
Macke, who was first runner-up, was asked why she wanted to be queen.
“I want to have the experience and learn more about the community and interact with people,” she said.
Barrett was asked what advice she would give her younger self.
“I would get more involved in high school,” she said. “I wish I had had gotten more involved in school.”
Judges also crowned the 2018 Little Miss in a contest that preceded the Calhoun County Queen contest. Raygin Olberding, 9, will wear the Little Miss crown for the next year.
