SCC School Board: Strong public schools depend on effective leadership

The Iowa Association of School Boards and South Central Calhoun Community Schools urge Iowans passionate about education to consider running in the Nov. 5 school board election.
Public schools need strong leadership and governance to ensure a bright future for all children and communities across the state.
Strong leadership is critical to moving education forward in our state. School board members play significant roles in their communities – they must have leadership, vision and dedication. They are charged with accountability for student learning, determining educational goals, setting policy, overseeing school finances and more.
School board members are elected to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years. Those elected receive no pay. Experienced school board members say the rewards of service lie in meeting the needs of children and communities.
“One way school board members can make an impact is by setting the vision and goals for the school district and hold them accountable for results,” said Darci Lightner, current board member.
“We make decisions that impact our entire community for years to come,” said Nick Spencer, who is in his first term. “The impact of those decisions, positive or negative, might not be realized right away. It is my hope that during my tenure, the board has made decisions that make the school district stronger academically, financially and culturally.”
The South Central Calhoun Community Schools has four seats up for election on Nov. 5.
