South Central Calhoun opened the 2018 baseball post-season on a high note with a 6-0 victory over rival Manson Northwest Webster Saturday, July 7 in Lytton. The Titans (12-10) advanced to the second round of the Class 2A, District 3 tournament and will face Pocahontas Area in Estherville Tuesday, July 10, at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to face either Emmetsburg or Estherville-Lincoln Central in Estherville Saturday, July 14 at 7 p.m.
The Titans had solid pitching performances from both Kyler Steinborn and Josh Henkenius in its win over the Cougars. Steinborn went 3.1 innings to pick up the win as he allowed no hits and struck out eight. Henkenius entered with one out in the fourth inning and pitched the final 3.2 innings as he allowed only two hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts.
Offensively, SCC got ahead early in the contest as the Titans scored twice in the bottom of the first inning off of MNW starting pitcher Brian Pearson. After a drawing a pair of walks to lead off the inning, Steinborn came to the plate and delivered an RBI single to plate Chase McAlister. Later in the inning, Chase Scheidegger would draw a walk with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in the Titans second run of the first.
