South Central Calhoun’s varsity baseball season came to a heart-breaking end for the Titans as rival Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon edged the Titans by a 3-1 final in 10 innings in the opening round of 2017 Class 2A, District 3 play in Pocahontas Saturday, July 8.
A two-run walk-off home run by the Indians’ Matt Hoffmeyer in the bottom of tenth inning helped propel the Indians (20-10) to the District 3 semifinals Tuesday, July 11 in Carroll against Alta-Aurelia, while the Titans’ season ended abruptly at 12-15 overall.
It was a showdown of two of the top pitchers from the Twin Lakes Conference squaring off in the first round of the Class 2A post-season as PAC/L-M’s Jace Davidson out-lasted SCC’s Kyler Steinborn in the 10-inning affair in the District 3 opener for both squads.
