SCC’s Welander breaking ground with FFA bee project

South Central Calhoun High School junior Raegan Welander grew up watching her grandfather raise and tend to bees.
When it came time to pick her own supervised agriculture experience – an FFA business project in which Welander will need to invest $1,000 and earn $1,000 – she didn’t think a livestock project would work.
“I thought (bees) would be a cool thing,” the Rockwell City resident said.
So she and her dad headed to an Iowa State University Extension class on beekeeping and bought her first hives. She now has four in two locations outside of town, at agricultural properties whose owners have let her use a little land for the hives. One of the landowners was so impressed by the project that he has started keeping hives, too, she said.
