Going into the third set, the No. 8-ranked (Class 2A) South Central Calhoun volleyball team was surprised – and not the pleasant type of surprised, either.

In their season opening match against Ridge View, held on August 27 at the Schaller-Crestland Elementary School Gymnasium in Schaller, the Titans stared up at a two-game deficit and on the brink of a sweep in favor of the Raptors. With their backs against the wall, the Titans had two options: to fold, or to rally.

SCC wisely chose the latter.

The Titans won their next two sets, intent on silencing the home crowd and starting their 2019 campaign with a mark in the win column. Leading 14-12 in the fifth and final game, SCC appeared to have the victory in hand.

Four points later, a winner was decided and the Titans left the court with defeat snatched from the cusp of victory.

In the wake of the match’s final events, SCC succumbed to a 3-2 setback against the Raptors. Ridge View won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-13, before the Titans countered with 25-21 and 25-20 victories until the Raptors rallied to a 16-14 match-sealing win.

SCC dropped to 0-1 overall going into the weekend, while Ridge View improved to 1-0.

This past weekend, the Titans took part in the Humboldt Tournament, held on Saturday. SCC faced off against the likes of Humboldt, Fort Dodge and other high quality opponents.

Due to the early deadline brought about by the observance of Labor Day, results from the Humboldt Tournament – along with the Sept. 3 road match against Carroll, home triangular St. Mary’s of Storm Lake and GTRA on Sept. 5 and the SCC “Early Bird” Tournament on Sept. 7 – will be posted in an upcoming edition of The Graphic-Advocate.
