Public Health, SCC Elementary team up to combat child abuse

Blue pinwheels seemingly sprouted at South Central Calhoun Elementary School last week.
The pinwheels represent adults who care for them, Principal Nicole McChesney and guidance counselor Sara Hoppenworth explained to students April 10. Hoppenworth led small groups of students through an exercise in which they shouted out the names of adults they knew and trusted, as part of a larger conversation about child abuse prevention.
“Look at all these people that you named who care about you and care about keeping you safe,” Hoppenworth said, after transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students listed their teachers, associates and other adults.
