Rockwell City Council members got a quick lesson on the benefits of making the town’s parks smoke-free at their meeting Jan. 20.

“It’s an area of enjoyment and pleasure,” said Tami Mohr, of the Calhoun County Public Health Department, about parks. Cigarettes, smoking and other tobacco products “make the environment not so appealing.”

Banning smoking in parks can improve the park’s atmosphere, and helps set an example of not smoking or using tobacco products in front of children, too, Mohr said. Her presentation was a follow-up to research Mohr had done on whether Calhoun County municipalities have outlawed smoking in parks and recreation areas. The research is a requirement of a tobacco prevention program Public Health is a part of, she said.
