Poen visits DC with Iowa Youth Tour

When South Central Calhoun High School senior Kyle Poen heard he could apply for a scholarship that would cover the cost of a trip to Washington D.C., he thought that sounded like a pretty good deal.
Poen filled out the application, was selected for an interview and ultimately was one of about 40 Iowa students chosen for the 2018 Iowa Youth Tour of the nation’s capitol. The week-long trip was packed full of experiences, not least of which was the chance to take an early morning run with Iowa’s senior U.S. senator, Charles Grassley.
“It was different than cross-country practice,” Poen said, adding Grassley met with the Iowa runners at about 4:30 a.m. for a three-mile run.
