The roots of the foster grandparent program, a collaboration between Shady Oaks Care Center and South Central Calhoun Elementary School, go back several decades.
SCC elementary is the third school to be involved in the program, which pairs third-grade students with care center residents for the school year.
“I think this is one of the most valuable things we do in third grade,” teacher Sheri Hanks said. “(The students) get over their fear of the older generation. The older generation just loves it.”
In the fall, students read with the seniors. In December, the students come caroling, and in the spring, they interview their senior partners. Those interviews were turned into articles and compiled in a booklet shared with the seniors at Friday’s visit, which also included a rousing round of Bingo.
