With time dwindling away, the South Central Calhoun boys’ basketball team trailed Madrid, 71-69.
Following an inbounds pass from junior guard Landon Schleisman, the Titans searched for an open look before settling with senior point guard Matthew Clark near the top of the key with five seconds to go.
Clark, a reliable sharpshooter all throughout the 2018-19 season, took the shot – only to see the go-ahead triple bounce off of the right side of the rim.
Madrid secured the rebound and drew the foul, but could only sink one of their two allotted free throws. This allowed for senior forward Jared Birks to heave a desperation shot from half court before the buzzer, only to see the ball stray away from its intended target.
In spite of the Titans’ valiant efforts, South Central Calhoun saw its spectacular run end on a somber note, falling to Madrid 72-69 in the Class 2A-District 12 championship on Feb. 19 at the Toreador Gym on the campus of Boone High School.
