On the South Central Calhoun Middle School stage last week, eighth-grade student Maggie Armstrong’s voice rose to a shriek.
Standing next to a table decorated to look like it might be found in a sit-down restaurant, Armstrong’s character berated her date, then she stormed away from the scene.
On the floor a few minutes later, Armstrong still vibrated with the energy she built up to perform the scene, one of several vignettes in the play “It’s Not You, It’s Me.”
“I like being dramatic,” Armstrong said, her eyes lighting up as she thought about the performance. “I like that I get to freak out, that I get to yell and be crazy.”
Armstrong is one of about 70 students involved in the three plays the middle school presented last week.
