Macke Motors hits the half-century mark in Lake City

 Gus Macke is thankful for a lot of things, but there’s one group of people that will come up again and again when he’s talking about the success of the car dealership that bears his family’s name.
“I’m most thankful for my employees, by far,” he said last week. “The community is great. The customers are great. But it’s the employees – it’s totally amazing.”
Macke Motors employs about 35 people, Macke said, with very low turnover. The dealership has grown in the 50 years since it first opened its doors in Lake City. Then, Macke’s brother, Steve, ran the show, starting at a location on the west side of the Lake City square. The dealership’s service shop was just down the block. In 1971, the same year Gus Macke came home after completing his military obligations, he joined the dealership, which moved to its present location on West Main Street.
