Lake City council takes on new requirements set by DNR

To address the new ammonia nitrogen requirement set by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the City Council of Lake City’s meeting with MSA Professional Services of Dubuque over the city’s lagoon discharges into Lake Creek was the main focus of the council’s latest regular meeting, held on May 6 at the Council Chambers in City Hall.
Despite holding a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit until August of 2023, the new requirement provided by the DNR is due to Lake Creek being a home of the endangered Topeka Shiner, a minnow that does not grow longer than a few inches. The Topeka Shiner is endangered due to its reliance on clean water to survive.
The council also approved building and fence permits and set a date for the 2019 Budget Amendment hearing. Alongside these measures, the council was provided updates such as installation of new playground equipment, restoration of the Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge and the addition of two more blocks of South Street to the street repair project.
