Jim Higgins

Jim Higgins, 70 of Carroll, died on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 4, at St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Kevin Richter. Concelebrant will be Fr. Shinoj Jose. Homilist will be Fr. Timothy Johnson.  Deacon Butch Stone will assist with the Funeral Mass.  Music will be by Jake Gute and Kathleen Macke. Lector for the Funeral Mass will be Karen Anderson.  Honorary Gift Bearers will be Noah Wellhausen, Luke Wellhausen, and Daniel Higgins III. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Don Gerken, Gary Rupiper, Keith Wellhausen, John Hood, Tom Hood, and the Staff of Sharp Funeral Home. Casket Bearers will be Steve Renze, Randy Schreck, Tom Twit, Dave Higgins, Mike Higgins, Alex Anderson, Jeff Steinkamp, Jason Steinkamp, and Jake Vogel. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be no public visitation on Friday at the church. Jim’s family asks that those attending the visitation to please wear a face covering. Face coverings are required for those in attendance at the Funeral Mass.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home for Kuemper Catholic School, Clarinda Lutheran School and Our Lady of Lourdes. Born October 4, 1949 in Lake City, Iowa, he was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Burke) Higgins of rural Lake City. He graduated from Lake City High School in 1968. After graduating, Jim attended Iowa State University and studied agronomy. He then moved back to the Lanesboro area to begin farming with his dad.

Jim and Denise Hood were married August 7, 1976 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville. Jim began farming outside of Carroll in 1977. He enjoyed his life of farming, feeding cattle, and buying and selling farm equipment. Jim was well-respected for his knowledge of machinery. For the past 6 years, he was employed at Sharp Funeral Home. Prior to this, he was employed at Twit Funeral Home. Jim’s caring and compassionate nature made this role a true calling for him. He thoroughly enjoyed the people he worked with and interacted with while working at the funeral home.

Jim belonged to St. Paul John II-Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll, Planning and Zoning Committee and Pork Producers.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Denise and family. He had a special love for his 3 grandsons who shared the same love for farming, rodeos and the Beach Boys. One of his hobbies was collecting toy farm equipment.

Jim is survived by his wife Denise, daughters, son-in-laws, and grandchildren: Angela and Dan Higgins and their son, Daniel, of Clayton, MO, and Allison and Chad Wellhausen, and sons Noah and Luke of Clarinda, IA; sister Colleen (Kenny) Steinkamp and brother Bill (Pat) Higgins, sisters-in-law Mary (Dick) Vogel, Diane (Dick) Devries, Susan (Curt) Willette, Patty (Steve) Harrison, Karen (Bob) Anderson; brothers-in-law Tom Hood and John (Janice) Hood and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Margaret Higgins, parents-in-law, Patrick and Margaret Hood, niece, Jennifer Steinkamp, and nephew, Michael Hood.
