Iowa Supreme Court extends limit on guns in courthouses

The Iowa Supreme Court last week changed its rules to prohibit the public from carrying guns anywhere in a county courthouse where a state judge may also be.
The rule effectively prevents carrying guns in any public areas of the courthouse, including the elevator at the Calhoun County Courthouse, Attorney Tina Meth Farrington told the Board of Supervisors June 29. Previously, a Second Judicial District judge had prohibited the public from bringing weapons into courtrooms.
“Do they have that right,” Supervisors Chairman Scott Jacobs asked Farrington, referring to the state’s high court justices.
They do, she said, though the same justices have consistently ruled against county boards of supervisors who tried to enact similar rules.
