Payton Steig donated blood for the first time during last year’s South Central Calhoun High School blood drive.
“It was scary at first,” she said. “It feels weird when you first start.”
But the sensations weren’t enough to discourage her from donating again. This year, the senior health occupations student plans to donate at the drive she’s helping organize. The blood drive is set for 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 25. It is open to the public.
Health Occupations teacher Lorie Otto said she’s hoping for community members to step up and sign up for some of the 123 blood donation time slots, particularly because the school’s football and volleyball teams are doing particularly well this year, which may mean those players aren’t able to donate blood. Otto is also worried about the weather – if the wet weather clears up, area farmers will likely be too busy in the field to come in to town to donate blood.
Blood donation is important, Otto’s students said.
