Scott Michael Greene, 46, of Urbandale, pleaded guilty to killing two police officers Friday.
The judge hearing his case sentenced Greene to two consecutive life sentences for the deaths of Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin and Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio. Though Polk County Attorney John Sarcone said at a press conference following the court hearing the plea deal and sentencing had been in the works for several weeks, a gag order prevented attorneys from alerting the public to Greene’s intention to plead guilty.
Martin, 24, was a native of Rockwell City. His father, Randy Martin, said his family was alerted to the plea a few weeks ago.
“I’m glad it’s over,” Randy Martin said Sunday afternoon.
At the press conference Friday, Urbandale Police Chief Ross McCarty talked about what the sentence means for his officers and community members.
