Marae Erkenbrack was teaching classes at Dance2Xtreme studio in Lake City before she’d finished high school.
When the South Central Calhoun graduate enrolled at Iowa Central Community College, she picked a career field that she hoped would give her steady, weekday hours and still give her time to teach classes in the evening at the studio.
Then, her boss announced she was moving to Colorado and asked Erkenbrack, who just turned 20, if she would be interested in buying and running the studio.
“She said she felt like the right time to move,” Erkenbrack said in an interview at the studio last week. “She had 100 percent confidence in me.”
Erkenbrack started taking lessons at the studio as a sixth-grade student. In eighth grade, she started competitive dance. In high school, she was a member of the SCC Dance Team, and she continued dancing at Iowa Central last year.
